Pu’u Ma’eli’eli Hiking Trail

The Pu’u Ma’eli’eli Hiking Trail, also known as Digging Hill, is a quick and easy hike on the Windward side of Oahu that provides incredible views from Kaneohe Bay all the way to Chinaman’s Hat. On a clear day you’ll even be able to see some of the outer islands; Molokai, Maui, and Lanai.

  • Trail Difficulty – Easy/Moderate
  • Length – 2 miles (round trip)
  • Duration – 1 to 2 hours
  • Condition – Shaded, muddy/slippery, steep

Important Information

  • Hours – Anytime
  • Parking – There is no dedicated parking as the trail actually begins along Kahekili highway. You will have to find parking in the nearby residential neighborhood around the corner and walk to the trailhead. Also, do NOT park in the shopping center, they will tow your vehicle away!

Getting to the Pu’u Ma’eli’eli Hiking Trail

The Pu’u Ma’eli’eli Hiking Trail begins right off of Kahekili highway, across from the Valley of The Temples. If you’re walking from the residential neighborhood, walk along the highway and it will be on your left hand side.

If it hasn’t rained in a few days, you’ll have an easier time getting up and down this trail. If it has rained, expect a lot of mud, slipping, and sliding!

Once on the trail, you’ll immediately face a pretty steep dirt hill. Like I stated above, if it’s dry, it’ll be easy, but if it has rained, you’re in for a challenge. After this hill, the trail continues to gradually climb in elevation. You’ll notice some terrain changes from a floor covered with overgrown roots, to the trail floor being covered in pine needles.

There are many viewpoints along the trail that offer views of the surrounding mountains, but the best view is at the top!

On the final steep climb up, there is ropes that are in place to help guide you up and down. You’ll know you’re at the top when you see this Pu’u Ma’eli’eli sign.

After the sign, continue on to reach the bunker. You’ll then be met with incredible panoramic views of the entire Windward side of Oahu!

This hike is one of the least trafficked hikes on the island, so if you’re lucky enough to be up here on your own, it’s definitely a peaceful place to escape to.
