Makapu’u Point Lighthouse Trail

The Makapu’u Point Lighthouse Trail is on the most eastern point of Oahu located within the Kaiwi State Scenic Shoreline. This hiking trail is the second most popular hike on Oahu after Diamond Head. That is because this trail offers magnificent views of the windward coast and two offshore islets (Rabbit Island and Kaohikaipu). It is also near many other popular attractions on this side of the island such as, Hanauma Bay, Sandy Beach, Makapu’u Beach Park, and KoKo Head.

  • Trail Difficulty – Easy/Moderate
  • Length – 2 miles (round trip)
  • Duration – 1 to 2 hours (lots of stopping for pictures!)
  • Condition – Dry, slopes, paved, no shade

On a clear day you can see the islands of Moloka’i and Lana’i in the distance. The two offshore islets seen from the top of this trail are wildlife sanctuaries for Hawaiian birds. Also, if in season (November through May) you can possibly see migrating humpback whales.

The Makapu’u Point Lighthouse Trail also features… you guessed it, a lighthouse! Although off-limits, it is still a sight to see from the view point at the top of the trail. The Makapu’u Lighthouse was built in 1909 and sits on a 600-foot sea cliff overlooking Makapu’u Beach Park below.

A bonus to this trail, is the Makapu’u Tide Pools. These tide pools feature a small blowhole and are very popular. They can be accessed from the first set of whale information signs. Proceed with caution! The trek down to the tide pools can be a little dicey and always take the weather and ocean currents into consideration before going.
